Record group 72-98 consists of two sets of records of the Kent County, Michigan Bureau of Social Services. The first set of records are newspaper clippings relating to social welfare aid (1936-45). Subjects of the clippings include Works Progress Administration, National Youth Administration, social welfare aid, direct relief, federal and state programs, employment and unemployment, food distribution, migrant workers, and personnel. The second set of records are direct relief case files (1933-66). Offers supporting information or complaints, listing name; age; sex; race; case number; number in relief group; date of first application; place of legal settlement; residence; marriage; citizenship; military service; social status; number of members in household at home and away; dates and places of employment; institutional care; membership in unions, lodges, etc.; and remarks about church affiliation.
